untitled appraisal

This artwork by Tim Burton is untitled, and does not feature in his official gallery, however such a rough and naive sketch that manages to be so good yet be excluded from his finest works gives you an idea of the talent of Tim Burton. This image illustrates the quirkiness of Tim Burton, which can be seen in his official web gallery, films and publications. His portrayal of men and women in each of his pieces are like no other, which is why I have chosen him as my artist of influence. The women have the most eerie characteristics with corpse like features, heavily shaded eyes and oversized, seemingly stitched up mouths. The thin lines shown consistently throughout each artwork illustrate a kind of frailty reflected by the over emphasised features of the characters in his pieces. The emotions of the artwork are created through the intensity of the tone of each line, with the centre of the eyes always being the darkest point in the piece, suggesting the hidden turmoil and pain within the character. This is supported through the pin like hairs upon her head, showing that her pain is mostly mental. The emphasis of the size of the head in comparison to her body illustrates the importance of the mind in reference to relationships with ourselves and others. The frail appearance of each of Tim Burton's characters are constructed in such a way that they seem on the verge of death themselves, and in this artwork there is no difference with this message more bluntly shown as the masculine figure is seen to be mummified. This demonstrates a clear juxtaposition between the two characters, with one showing an almost overwhelming expression due to a complications of emotions with the other restrained from showing any feelings symbolised through the restriction of the bandages. It is the simple expressionist approach to interpreting everyday characters that makes Tim Burton's illustrations so unique helping him to develop a nsme for himself within his field.
